My paintings and collages are narrative landscapes influenced by 16th century
Persian miniature illuminations – book illustrations of local mythology and
religion commissioned by the aristocracy. With their architectural, almost comic
book framing, the miniatures provide a whimsical construction for telling stories
of a people and their culture. In my work the ordinary, everyday person going
about their daily life is exalted rather than the remarkable individual. This
commonality of human behaviour and iconography transcends religion
or culture. The narrative element combined with the cubistic nature
of the work where grids of flat pattern disturb the angle of architecture
results in an unusual blend of worldliness and naiveté. Human figures
and architecture are swallowed up by the complexity of pattern. Humanity,
art, culture and nature are the chaotic elements that form a universal order.
