Louise Markus is a writer, painter and multimedia artist. She graduated with honors in Literature & Creative Writing, 1997, as well as Studio Arts, 2001, both from Concordia University in Montreal. In 1999, along with partner and award winning architect Grant Genova, Markus bought and renovated a fish warehouse in Montreal and initiated Roy Street Collective, a group of artists mounting multimedia art and architecture events in the building. Highlights were “Bats” a Halloween cabaret and art event in collaboration with Montreal’s popular circus group; Carnivale Carmagnole, and “Tabernacle”, a multi-media architectural event, supported by Montreal’s Journées de la Culture from 2003 to 2006. Markus showed her work and managed every entrepreneurial and curatorial aspect of these self-financed shows. She initiated collaboration with notorious graffiti collective KOPS, producing “Akopolypse”, a hip hop New Year’s art event and “Kopulation”, a spring art party featuring live painting and music.
Although Markus has shown in commercial art fairs and galleries in North America, she considers herself an entrepreneurial, renegade artist. Her self-financed, DIY efforts are designed to support and revitalize communities through art. The most notable of these shows are “From the Ashes” an Arts for Art, post 9/11 event at Q.U.A.N.D.O. a famous artist squat in Manhattan’s lower east side, as well as “Hawthorne Revisited” at the Hawthorne Historical Museum in Florida. The blog, www.65chevypickup.com describing the adventures of Markus & Genova in the art and architecture world, is one of Markus’ many current projects.
